Implementing ISO 26262 Together with SOTIF

by Dr.Juan Pimentel published on May 28, 2020

ISO 21448 (SOTIF) is currently in a committee draft (CD) form and work is underway to become a DIS later this year. The current document includes much more material compared with the previous PAS version, particularly how SOTIF is aligned with ISO 26262. Although many SOTIF processes can be aligned with corresponding ISO 26262 processes, there are unique SOTIF processes such as functional modifications to reduce risk and functional safety assessment. Several issues involving the joint implementation of ISO 26262 and SOTIF will be discussed. An autonomous vehicle functionality involving a lidar-based perception system will be used to illustrate an integrated implementation approach. Join Omnex’s Dr. Juan Pimentel, a member of the US technical Advisory Group for ISO 21448, to understand the nature of this new draft standard and how to implement it with ISO 26262 in an integrated fashion. Dr. Pimentel is also a developer and instructor in Omnex’s series of SOTIF related Certification courses.
